Apart from some slight out of character stupidity of the "let's split up!" variety at the end, this is a solid read and beautifully written. The last quarter of the book gets really intense, I literally could not stop reading till I found out what happened.
Yes it was long, but I personally loved all the scene setting and getting to know the characters. I need to care about characters to actually get invested in the story and so, so many books just don't bother. Books are not movies. If you're looking for a snappy 200 page read which is just a bunch of action scenes strung together you probably will hate this.
And just for the peace of mind of anyone who instantly gets worried any time a dog appears in a horror novel, Rex is totally fine the whole way through.

this book could have changed my life on a cellular level. But it just didn’t??
I think there were too many POVs and very few of them worth investing in. The spooky bit was too short. Still thinking very deeply about the ‘rules’ underpinning the fantasy/supernatural elements of the story and think that aspect was all class.

I had been in a bit of a slump until I got to this.
The book is set on a small island and follows several characters. There’s the big mystery thing going on but I think I enjoyed working out what all of the characters were about a lot more than how the main story would unfold. I also adore the setting, there’s something about a small island in Scotland that really does it for me. It builds tension well and whilst long it reads quickly (to the point I thought I’d read a 250-300 page book when I finished).
In some ways this was quite Stephen King to me, came for the spooky thing but stayed for the characters.
It wasn’t a perfect book, which I won’t go into as there’s potential spoilers, but I enjoyed it more than an awful lot of books I’ve read.
I loved spending time with this book and I’m interested in checking out more of this author.
