2.5/5 stars
It wasn’t extremely bad but it also wasn’t anything too spectacular!
What I didn’t like:
• I wasn’t really interested in the three stories, I basically did not care what happened because it wasn’t exciting enough
• I didn’t care about the characters either! Not even about the young three year old boy. I especially couldn’t stand George! Damn he’s an a**
• for some reasons it didn’t really feel like I was reading from three different times/decades/centuries! I can’t tell you exactly why though...
• the writing wasn’t anything special either, for my taste way too many unnecessary information
• maybe I’m stupid but I don’t really get the whole bee thing?
SPOILER AHEAD!!!!!!
• I knew it was a freaking bee sting from the beginning!!?? Was it supposed to be a mystery?

The premise was really interesting and I was hoping it would be more intriguing. I had a hard time with both of the male characters and just found them annoying. The subject matter was very thought provoking though.

beautifully written with great social commentary that is unfortunately becoming more and more relevant as time goes on. history, ecology, and psychology were woven together wonderfully! the only thing is that I wish the characters were a little more fleshed out, parts of them felt very one dimensional which was jarring against the vividly painted landscape. realizing now that this is a series, perhaps the characters will have more to them in the following books - which I will definitely read.
3.5/5
i liked it!! took a little while to get into but when it was all coming together at the end was when i got more interested. i also liked the little questions with the author section at the end!
bees are dying! plant some good wild flowers if you can!

I finished listening to this yesterday. I don't know how to rate it as it fell flat for me in some ways, yet absorbed me in others. I never considered abandoning it, wanted to know where it was going, and really liked the three-story approach. Unfortunately, I didn't care about most of the characters very much and frequently felt annoyed with pretty much all of them. Even so, there was something that kept my interest...the bees, perhaps?
Despite the significance of the subject, this book seriously lacked in depth. The connections between the characters was obvious and superficial, without enough character development to make me care that any of their names were remembered generations later. The story set in the future had a lot of promise but the world-building was ineffective and the resolution is inexplicable. A guy builds a hive that someone else already built, a guy loses his bee colonies, and a boy gets stung by a bee when they return. The end.
