book captivated me! i loved the setting and the culty, creepy history of the town. add on top the cicadas and yuck!! lol but the pacing was decent until the end when it just ended abruptly. things ended well but it was just a well done build up for it to just end.
but once i started this it kept me intrigued. i loved the vibe of it and the characters (well some, anyways). and the themes too. some of the writing and characters were predictable but they all played their parts well and i do have to remember it’s YA so this makes sense. not to discount the writing but just a different perspective

Started strong, which was enough to mostly take me through to the end! It pulled all of its punches at the last minute - I could have done with some serious consequences for selling one’s soul, but they all seemed sort of metaphorical. Still, a fun format!

I read this based on the tiktok advertisements (for fans of true detective season 1 haha) and it fit the vibe I was sold! I’m not really sure what made this young adult other than the characters being 18 honestly it was pretty dark. It took a long time to reach the climax, but everything wrapped up nicely

this is partially my own fault for not knowing in advance that this book is YA………..
but this is not the level of horror i was expecting from the description of this book so i did feel let down by that. the amount of POVs also makes it a bit of a difficult read. the devils plotline was intriguing but the follow through just wasn’t there for me unfortunately :/

I love a good southern gothic with actual supernatural elements, I loved the cast of characters who were a really of bunch of kids dealing with cards life had given them. It asks the question what would you do when making a deal with the devil to get all that you wanted? My major critique is that the ending was rushed and lot of loose ends were tied up to quickly. In away the author's execution fell flat while in the world building and characters inner thoughts and motivations shined. Its not perfect an enjoyable new read and with fresh new voice.
