An ambitious work by Lountemis, this book knits together five different stories of people who faced some of 20th century's greatest disasters, from WWI to the Greek civil war.

The author displays humanity at its finest when faced against some of the most cruel days of the past century, drawing a lot of his material from his own experiences.

Only negative is this book suffers, in its final part, from a severe deus ex machina syndrome, attempting to extract a happy ending for its more favored protagonists. The ending felt a bit rushed, clumsy and, as expressed in the book's final sentence, even ambiguous, a happy ending that is postponed and will probably never come.
