Didn’t finish this book, but don’t write reviews or provide ratings on books I DNF.

I think a lot of people will like this! Just wasn’t for me.

An interesting alternate history murder mystery set in a non-colonized North America. The protagonist, Chibenachi, is a peacekeeper (cop) in the small town of Baawitigong. The mystery centers on the murder of his mother 20 years earlier, when he and his sister were still children, and a possibly related murder of his mother’s best friend 20 years to the day later. The murder plot was standard, and I figured out the murderer very early in the story, but I nevertheless remained invested in the strong world-building involving an alternate system of both legal and social justice.

I thought the idea of an America that had never been colonized was interesting, and especially enjoyed the description of a modern day city built with Native American values and traditions in mind. The mystery did not interest me and the plot was really a downer.

I love the idea of this world, especially the justice system. The execution was a bit clumsy in spots (with info dumps that I found jarring as they essentially explained to the reader how this alternate world is different from ours).

The plot was decent. I guessed the murderer from the beginning, but was surprised by the motive. The author was also skilled enough at presenting information that I was occupied for most of the book trying to guess the truth about a clue that turned out not to pertain to the murder after all.

I can't pretend that the book left me with a good feeling by the end, but I'm not sorry I read it.
