Not into the style of writing and as it turns out, didn't love the subject matter either.
I wanted to love this book. I didn't. The parts about the Neanderthal are wonderfully written (except that I didn't get that they were the LAST Neanderthal family until the end - duh!). Unfortunately, the chapters on the Neanderthal family are interspersed with chapters from the perspective of the archaeologist who exhumes the skeleton. The dialog is clunky, I do not care about the archaeologist or why she is even there. She just serves to pull me out of the story, so I ended up skipping the chapters she appeared in.
I started this book thinking it was just going to be a story of survival and changing perceptions.
But it turned out to also be a story of motherhood and the challenges mothers face- throughout history.

I found this books totally engrossing while I was reading it. It's a terrifically told story. But, if you're looking for insight into what Neanderthals were like, it's not the choice for you. Those in this story are depicted as MUCH more primitive. Think of them as a mash up of other human species.
I enjoyed this point of view and the variety of timelines. I found this book to be engaging and emotionally compelling.
Enjoyed it. Fan of the Clan of the cave bear series so would naturally give this one a go. decent novel and story. Modern lady a bit overwhelmed while the ancient one just went with it. Probably a better way to handle life.

A touch of history mixed in with the modern world. Mirroring the lives of past and present we follow the lives of Rose, an archeologist and Girl, the last Neanderthal. Each women must learn the skills for survival in their own time period. The story chronicled both lives well. I did feel for some similarities the author tried too hard to make connections in a corny way, but other then that the book was well done. The ending did leave one to wonder... so don't expect a sense of closure.

I enjoy books that go back and forth in history, as this one did, but the historic chapters of the book were so much more interesting and engaging than the modern-day chapters that I wish the entire book had focused on the Neanderthal time period.
