Well, neither a quick nor easy read, but worth it, in my opinion. I liked the slowly building plot and the complex prose, although I had to re-read any number of sentences to make sure I understood them (and didn't always succeed, I am sure). A complicated look at the life of a young woman struggling to live a free, authentic and independent life, ahead of her time.

Beautiful really is the most condescending way to describe something, huh?

That ending though...!
Not my favorite "classic" but I'm glad I read it

Magnífico, como todo Henry James.

DID NOT FINISH

I really tried to like this book, okay, and that's not something I usually do. If I don't fall in love immediately I choose something else, no hard feelings – it just wasn't for me.
But god did I try to like this one. I started it seven times. Seven. And never managed to push forward than page 120. It always felt like a chore to open it and read those 3-4 pages before I had to put it down and let my brain have some fresh air.
The pacing of the story was slow (too slow for a xix book), the characterization of every woman was way off.
I gave up trying to read this and I'm not giving it any more chances.

I feel perpetually strange rating books on Goodreads that I read for school. Like do I rate it based on how much I personally enjoyed it? How much I think it has contributed to my education? How much I got out of it and engaged with it?
