Really a 4 1/2. Some readers may think it too strange with the supernatural touches but, for me, another winner. Only book in series that I don't think Clete is even mentioned once. Only one I've read where he isn't at least referred to at all.

Definitely worth a read

Burke knows how to keep a reader guessing. I loved it from beginning to end. He never got cliche and his characters felt so real.

Got this in a roadhouse in the middle of Western Australia for six bucks to read on the bus; and for that price and my purpose, it was great. I thought it was a high quality disposable crime novel.

This 1993 novel features Dave Robicheaux, a recovering alcoholic and former New Orleans police officer now serving as a detective in his home town of New Iberia. When a movie company descends on the town, it stirs up more than just curiosity. Mafia ties to a producer who attended high school with Dave, the uncovering of a decades-old murder and the murder of two women provide plenty of action. What lifts Burke's writing above the ordinary is his marvelous dialogue, gift of setting and the authenticity of his characters. The title alone is a gift, a hint of this author's descriptive powers. There are scenes in which he describes visions of Confederate soldiers (you'll have to read the book to see what that's about) that make me wish he'd write an entire novel on the subject.

Like all James Lee Burke books, I loved this one. I actually read this years ago. I’m in the process of going back and listening to all of this author’s books on Audible. I think all of the richness of the language, the strong narrative skill, and the masterful story telling of Burke lend themselves well to this format.
