This is oddly gripping crime thriller with a historical / supernatural twist with a bit of mob-style action thrown in for good measure. Robicheaux is on the hunt for a serial killer targeting young women when an old school friend turned mob boss turns up and needs to be persuaded to leave again. But he is involved in the filming of a Civil War movie that is bringing a lot of cash to town and the director isn't keen on losing his funding. Then a skeleton is found during filming that stirs a long forgotten memory for Robicheaux, one that finds him heading down a dangerous path unearthing old hatred and painful pasts. All of these stories twist and turn into each other in odd ways, yet the book is surprisingly easy to follow (for the most part), prodding some difficult subjects and leaving the reader to balance them out as characters swing from likelable to hatable and back again, all while hunting a modern day murderer.

I really like the meandering style James Lee Burke employs with detective Dave Robicheaux. There's magic in the bayou and there's danger and there are things that can't be explained, and Burke seems to get that. This one is a good exploration into the heart of the South.

James Lee Burke's Dave RObicheaux novels are great works of fiction. He really makes. you feel as if you are in the heat, city, marsh and at his home. He tells a wonderful story and his love of his family is so strong that you find yourself loving them and fearing for them too. Movie being made in New Iberia brings money and problems to Dave's town and home... and Dave takes it personally.

Weird mix of violence and woo woo made this one meh for me. 2.5 stars.
This series just keeps getting better with each book. Dave is a fascinating character, the plot of this book was one of the best in the series, and I always enjoy the descriptions of the lush scenery. Listened to the audio version read by one of my favorites the late Mark Hammer.
