Another part of world history that I knew absolutely nothing about. I had no idea that Spain had been such an isolationist country after World War 2, nor that it had once been a dictatorship. While it's a very rudimentary introduction to Spanish history, this is a great living book for middle grade and high school readers. (There is the slightest hint that the two main characters spend the night together at the very tail end of the book, but it's completely clean otherwise.)

It does seem a bit ridiculous to have 150 chapters in a 500-page book. I would have preferred longer chapters with section breaks to identify when the scene switched to a different character, but that's a very minor quibble.

Ruta Sepetys is a wonderful author. While her books are marketed as YA, they will appeal to readers of all ages. I love that she tackles parts of history that are completely unknown to me. I learn so much with each of her books.

I love Ruta Sepetys’ books because I always actually learn something that is overlooked or pushed under the rug by history!

4.5 stars. This book was so well written. I learned a lot about a time and place with which I was not very familiar.
