I don’t get the hype with this one. Jean Brodie made my skin crawl and the writing was repetitive. I know this is considered a classic so I am obviously missing something! I listened on audible and Miriam Margolyes was fantastic as always just a shame the novel wasn’t for me.

What a delight: hilarious, baffling, entrancing.
I loved this book. It started out disorienting, as it moved back and forth in time and I questioned my ability to see the deeper context because of time and setting. Then everything started coming together. My understanding of Miss Brodie deepend as the story unfolded and I began to question this woman's intentions and inability to consider consequences. Sandy developed so much as a character too, the character development was done so well. Some plot points were just dropped in like bombs, others slowly revealed. The men in this book are awful, but I feel Miss Brodie had a lot to answer for and it was revealed more and more as the novel went on. There was a moment when a character said, "Oh" and the tone could have changed the entire meaning of the scene and Muriel Spark wrote so perfectly to bring to life the tone of that one word that the meaning was clear. But it wasn't heavy-handed, it was done so easily and beautifully I had to truly admire her writing.
This was very well written and quite funny. The storyline, unacceptable by modern standards, went where I expected it to. The characters were drawn in rough strokes, each member of the Brodie set basically conforming to a stereotype (but colourful nevertheless). Worth reading, but I do think I prefer Stella Gibbons to Muriel Spark.
