I was a little disappointed by this book, and found it a little too repetitive and opaque for my taste. however, it reads quickly and isn't boring. but, ultimately I wasn't that moved by it.
Oh, I did not enjoy this as much as I thought I might do. I think the only reason I actually wanted to read it was because I was only reading “classics” at the time and potentially wanted something a bit lighter, because I don’t actually know what I expected to enjoy about this book.
I thought because the audiobook was only about 4 hours long, that I would be able to get through that relatively easily while doing my work but oh boy how wrong I was. I literally could only listen to it in fits and starts and I think the longest I listened to it in one go was about 15 minutes.
So, already not off to a great start. But the story itself for me was very lacking. It’s a story about a woman who is a teacher, who believes herself in her prime and who spends most of her time talking about herself and her experiences rather than actually teaching her pupils. She creates a “set” of pupils who become her special confidences but does so with the intention of playing them off against each other.
Miss Brodie was not a particularly likeable character and in fact, most of the characters of the young girls of the “Brodie set” were quite unbearable too.
The only saving grace was that the audiobook was narrated by Miriam Margolyes who I adore. Literally the best thing about it and even she wasn’t enough to make me listen for more than 15 minutes at a time.

I picked this slim little title up years ago at a bargain book store and it had been sitting on my shelf untouched ever since. Then, just a couple of weeks ago, I was surprised to see it listed in the 100 Best Novels list put out by The Modern Library. I decided to finally give it a read and I'm very glad I did.
The story is incredibly engaging and not just a little bit sexy. The writing is beautiful and Muriel Spark has a real, rare gift for economy of language and the turning of a simple phrase. Also, I later found out that a young Maggie Smith plays Jean Brodie in the movie version and I think that imagining her in the role will add to the enjoyment of the book.

Not sure if I was bright enough for this book.
Great use of children as unreliable narrators and never knowing truly what happened. But poor Ms Brodie, and her prime. What a shame she was a fascist.
