Hmm. Well, this had potential. It really did. I loved the concept of this book. And it started out fairly well. But then… the follow through just wasn’t there for me.

The beginning and ending of The Thief were strong enough, but the middle portion got a bit murky. The overall plot itself was fine and easy to follow, but some more editing could have helped to pare it down. As it was, I found it easy to put down in favor of reading something else.

Our main characters, Josephine and Xavier, weren’t quite as fleshed out as I would have liked. We do find out about both of their back stories to learn more about them, and they were complex and had their own quirks. Yet there was something lacking, and they didn’t feel especially realistic.

Overall, there were some really good moments in The Thief, but not enough to make this the best reading experience possible. Hauf is an apparently accomplished author and most of her books have above average ratings on Goodreads. Maybe I should try a different book of hers, or perhaps her writing style is just not for me.

This book has potential but I'm honestly so disappointed by how it ended up playing out. The romance wasn't convincing to me and the plot itself was semi interesting but there were too many characters who were too vague. It set itself up quite abruptly, which would have worked better if the gaps had been followed through, but there were too many loose threads for me to buy into the romance and the connection between the two characters.
