The Adoption is the first book I’ve read by this author and it’s a gripping domestic thriller. The first half of the book is quite slow paced but once we get past that it’s like being hit by a steam train there is so much going on in the second half. I felt like I was on a roller coaster at times with all the twists and turns. Often in a book I’m reading I know who to trust and where things are heading but with this one I was completely clueless and didn’t know how things were going to turn out. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I’ll certainly be reading more.

The Adoption is an upcoming thriller by Jenna Kernan about a traumatized women who struggles to grasp her new reality once she returns home from a psych facility. A near-fatal crash leaves her with feelings of depression, anxiety and despair, as well as unable to have her own children. Until her husband surprises her days after returning home with a newly adopted baby.

This book was slow at the beginning, but halfway through became fast-paced with a seemingly new twist every chapter. Although I overall enjoyed this quick read, it was a bit predictable and repetitive. It was easy to sympathize with Dani’s character but I also found myself irritated with how gullible she was. This book employed the unreliable narrator very well, utilizing a traumatic brain injury in a unique and interesting way. The ending, albeit mostly satisfying, was a bit too complicated for me and would have been better with a few less twists.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I really wanted to like this book. The concept was really great. I think for me the biggest obstacle was that there were too many repetitive informative details in the first half. I felt like I wasn’t trusted to remember what I’d just read in the previous chapter, so it was given to me over and over again and it took away from my ability to really get into the story. It also made the first half of the book drag really slowly because the repetition took away from building the plot. The story started to pick up a lot by the second half and got me really interested to see where it would go, but then there was too much going on too fast that it also took away from the experience.
I think this book would have been much more enjoyable if we had spent less of the first half reading details of Dani’s disabilities over and over again and all the action from the second half was spread out over more of the chapters.

"Self Blame is useless. If you have made mistakes, you learn from them and move forward."

wow I loved this book !!! Jenna Kernan has a great way of leaving you completely speechless with her books. I went into this book thinking if was an adoption gone wrong story- but it was so much more than that. I can't go into much detail without spoilers but the layers in the story will make you want to keep digging!! I loved Dani as a character !! She is brave and strong in her own way, even tho she is broken inside. She puts her daughter first just like every good mother should, and she takes care of herself.

you will just have to trust me with this one... this book is great !! go read it immediately !!

Thank you Bookouture, Netgalley and Jenna Kernan for and ARC of this book !!
