An uncomfortable and curious read. Loved the sprawling plot.

Loved this! Highly suggest listening to a Paris cafe playlist while reading. While I felt some early details were unnecessary to the story, the rest of the book was beautiful and I can't wait to get back to France someday.

The book lacked focus and opened too many doors without following through on the themes. It was all over the place with no real depth or satisfaction in any of the storylines.
For instance, the main character's [trigger warning]child sexual assault had no place in this novel.
Also, could you please not describe James Baldwin (who the author admits to never having met) as "ugly-beautiful"... TWICE?!
The descriptions of food were glorious throughout, and the whole thing had a very cozy "found family" vibe, but overall it was kind of a mess. And it's a bit unbelievable the way it all plays out...

I didn't find the characters compelling. I got annoyed that the main character wouldn't process her trauma with people who cared about her.

Ruth Reichl is one of my favourite authors so i was excited to see what she would do with a novel. Although there were a lot of different elements and characrers in the book I almost wished the book was longer so she could dive into all the themes and characters she introduces its a easy read for the summer.
The main character's mom whom she didnt have a great relationship with passes and leaves in her will that she must use her money to go to Paris. Set in the 80s she runs into artist, writters and chefs while spending some time exploring the city and finding herself. The perfect book to make you wish you were in Paris having a cafe au latte at a city cafe watching her stroll by.
