This was a pretty good read until the last few chapters I think. I didn’t think the story would make the perpetrators the obvious choice because I called it a little before the halfway point. The epilogue was interesting but the plot feels kinda cliche, though I suppose Locke may have intentionally done that to accompany the commentary on justice and race.

Yowza, this is great stuff. If Cormac McCarthy wrote a murder mystery, this would be it. It's dark, stark and has a depth to it that is engrossing. I couldn't put it down. The characters are vibrant in that they seem real and colorful, but not made to be stereotypes. I feel like I've been to this town and witnessed these people and their relationships.

This is a very different type of book than I typically read - essentially a literary murder mystery - but it was so good! Great, flawed characters, surprising twists and important race conversations. The settling was so vividly described that it feels like I have been in this town (although I've never actually been to East Texas). Highly recommend with one caveat: it has a cliff-hanger ending! However, the next one was published in 2019 so no worries.

Interesting mystery, but boy does the Ranger make bad decisions.
