Brutal. Well written. I was on the fence because people seem to either love this book or hate it but I did enjoy it.

Overall, this book has a really great spot. It’s a perfect setting for a horror story obviously cannibals are like that however, I was lost at what the point of this book was. at first I thought it was a critique of the animal food industry and I as a vegan thought that was a really interesting point of view. however, after reading the book, I’m not sure if this is a critique of the animal industry, as much as a critique of the evil of humanity all together. either way an interesting lesson, and that made it an interesting read. The only other thing I did not like is that some of the stories seem to be very loosely strung together, and a bit lazy. This also could come from issues with translation, since the book is not originally in English. overall the story was incredibly interesting, and the ending had a dynamic twist, but I was also not sure how the dynamic true twist seems possible based on the behavior of the characters during the rest of the story. it seem like it was, put there to be dramatic on Purpose, without a lot of basis for the drama to exist.

A virus has ravaged the world’s animal population with deadly consequences for any humans who come in contact with them. An alternative protein source had to be found and humans are now being bred for this very purpose. Except nobody calls them humans, all kinds of euphemisms are used to sanitise what is actually happening. Marcos is part of that, he works for a processing plant, until one day he is gifted a very good quality female specimen. Initially he leaves her tied up to be dealt with later but soon he becomes haunted by the situation he had found himself in.

Wow. I had seen this around bookstagram a lot, particularly on accounts of people that I really trust their judgement of books, and I had thought about picking it up so many times and kept leaving it. I can’t believe I waited so long.

This was written before the Covid19 pandemic but I could see so many parallels to how people acted during the virus in the book and in real life during the pandemic. It was kind of eery reading it.

I don’t read an awful lot of translated books but this was very well written and translated, it didn’t feel obvious to me that it wasn’t originally written in English. The writing had a lovely flow to it and I was absolutely gripped and couldn’t stop reading.

This book really got my brain buzzing. I am not a vegan or vegetarian but I’m also not one of those people who feels they have to eat meat all the time. I eat what I enjoy and sometimes that is completely meat free and other times it’s not. I wouldn’t say I’m completely ignorant as to how the meat industry works but I also don’t really give it a great deal of thought. I love a book that is thought provoking like this and it really did make me think about what I would do in this situation. I think this will stay with me for a while.

I loved the way Bazterrica kind of threw us right in to the situation and then explained things in a natural way within the story as it went on. The characters were complex and flawed, which I always really enjoy as well.

As always, there will be no spoilers from me but the ending was exceptional.

I honestly don’t have any complaints about this, genuinely well worth the hype!
