As per usual I will not give a star rating on a book that just wasn’t clicking for me. I actually got about half way before putting it aside. I liked the first book but this one was a no go.
Man cannot live by Pratchett alone. Every now and then, he must venture next door and read some Holt. I sort of forgot about Holt for many years-- rediscovered him recently, and haven't regretted it.
I haven't read the first in this series-- Doughnut-- but that didn't seem to hinder my enjoyment. Holt's fiction is always a well-shaken mixture of humor and science, with an everyman protagonist who is plunged into chaos. But it's highly entertaining chaos for the reader. The protagonist generally doesn't enjoy it much.

It was a great book even though I didn't understand half of what was going on.
I really got to love this series and re-reading often. It's just the kind of genre I like - fantasy/sci-fi mixed with silly humour. Oh, them Brits! :D
This is the first Holt novel I've read that felt like a chore. I enjoyed all of the JW Wells & Co series. Though this story had some of Holt's usual twists and turns, there were long passages where I was bored. Maurice (the central character) was quite similar to Paul from JW Wells & Co, he lacked the likeability and I didnt care about what was going to happen to him.
