This is a book I hope will make its way onto the shelves of many middle school and high school libraries. It’s joyful, heartfelt, emotionally rich, complex, and full of diverse perspectives and stories. I’ve never been to a pow wow but this collection itself offers an experience that gives you a sense of the community feeling of these celebrations. Also, you’ll put it down wanting to check out more writing by the many authors featured here.

Wish there had been a story about a queer character--unless i missed it? Otherwise absolutely loved this anthology and it was really out here trying to make me cry in Aldi multiple times.

Rep: All MCs and most side characters are Indigenous to North America--various tribal identities including Seneca, Cherokee, Cree, Navajo, Anishinaabe--Ojibwe, Apache, Lipan, Choctaw. Biracial characters.

CWs: Bullying, discussions of colonization and cultural appropriation, child abuse, racism.

First, I highly recommend listening to powwow music while reading this, if you're the type who can/has to listen to music to focus on reading. Second, I really enjoyed this. I've been trying to broaden my horizons, especially when it comes to learning about and understanding Native American and First Nations cultures and I think Ancestor Approved was an informative and compelling introduction to a variety of cultures. I think what a culture teaches their children often represents what that culture most values and while I obviously have a lot to learn about the many cultures included in Ancestor Approved, I know a lot more than I did before and I'm grateful.

Apart from that the stories are engaging and entertaining and once I started, I couldn't stop. Catching glimpses and common threads in each story made me want to keep reading and I'm looking forward to looking back now that I have all the stories in mind and rereading to see connections I might have missed.

There's something for everyone in this series of short stories. All of the stories in here are surrounding a powwow at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and I loved seeing characters in some stories showing up in others. Kids who are fans of short stories will definitely love this!
