Thank you Netgalley, Storm Publishing and Amanda Mckinney

This is the first book of Amanda McKinney's that Ive read and it really was unputdownable. I pretty much read it within one setting as it's a short medium paced thriller. I found it was probably more plot driven but did have a great mix of character building. There was plenty of believable twists to the narrative and the pay off at the end was great. Im wondering if we might see more of Rowan Velky in future books.

A Marriage of Lies by Amanda McKinney
Narrated by Elise Roth

We know Detective Rowan Velkey is in very big trouble as the story opens because she's being questioned about the murder of a woman and the evidence against her is strong. Then we go back in time, seeing the story from several angles, mostly from Rowan's POV but also from the POV of Amber and a few other characters. Rowan's rough and constantly changing childhood made her the way she is as a adult even though she's tried her best to overcome much of the harm inflicted by her lack safety and stability in her childhood.

Rowan's rock was one of the first people to ever care for her, Shepherd, her friend first and later boyfriend and husband. They made promises to love and protect each other forever and Rowan has tried to hold up her end of the bargain but Shep is telling lies and not being there for Rowan, anymore. For a lot of reasons, Rowan is seeing a therapist named Amber but to Amber's frustration, she can get little out of Rowan who often just sits in silence during her appointments.

Now Rowan is being accused of murder and things look very bad for her. So many of the characters in this story seem to be connected in one way or another. It's a very small world feel here when everything is laid out for us. So many twists and turns that in the end, when things seem so straight forward instead, I was expecting one more twist. This story had me pondering over things all night long. Be careful out there, secrets may not stay secret and they may be used against you in the worst of ways! Elise Roth did a very good job with the narration of this story.

Thanks to my library and Libby for this audiobook.

Every marriage has secrets…
👩🏻‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏻
Rowan is a dedicated detective who loves her job, but her marriage seems to be falling apart. Her husband is lying to her, she assumes he’s having an affair and she is starting to have feelings for her younger partner. Amber is a therapist who is stuck in a boring marriage with a son who seems to have cognitive disabilities that her husband is ignoring. Amber is Rowan’s therapist and the two realize they are connected through a murder case that shakes the small town they live in.

This started off strong for me. Lots of suspense, a grisly murder and flashbacks that had me wondering how it was all connected. However, I figured the twist out early on, but even so still found this to be an enjoyable thriller book. I want to read more by this author.
