I loved this evocative, richly told tale of an indomitable woman at the turn of the century (1900, I mean) who wants to paint the world as she sees it. But tragedy, a ruthless guardian, and disaster all stymie her. Nevertheless, she perseveres, traveling from Saint Louis to the island of Martinique to New York to New Mexico. A delicious read!
