A good book for kids looking for a quick read with an inspiring message. Filled with reality and a good dose of humor that teaches how to thwart bullying.

This book was pitched to me as a real live "Wonder" story, but it fell a bit flat for me.
I felt the writing was a bit choppy, consisting of a string of anecdotes about the author's childhood (mostly stories of overcoming bullies and yearning to play sports). Although the stories were interesting, and competently told, they felt emotionally lacking.
Maybe it was me... it probably was me.
I think the fact that the author talked so matter-of-factly about the way his mother was ready to abandon him because of his deformities didn't really sit well with me. I felt that knowing this singular fact would have left a much larger emotional scar than all the surgeries combined...and the author just kind of dismisses it offhand. This made me feel like the author wasn't being completely truthful with the reader.

Great book. Picked it up as potential booktalk title for local middle school. True story reminiscent of Wonder. Accessible for even grades 4 and up. Positive message of everyone has Challenges and accept yourself for who you are.
