Very honest look at what it means to be born with multiple deformities - the effect on himself and his family and the amazing person he made of himself. Speaks to the power of defining yourself rather than letting others define you based on their prejudices.

I read this to determine if it would be appropriate for my son (7) to read. I think this is a great book that makes the topic of being different and feeling different approachable for kids. I think he'll get more from it if he reads it in a couple of years. But I'll definitely remember this book.

An amazing memoir that could be an amazing companion to Wonder. Robert's story is told with candor and humor. It gives a young reader great insight into what it is like growing up looking different from others and how cruel children, as well as adult. can be. It is a great example of how one person who is differently abled can beat the odds, survive 24 surgeries and have a wonderful life.

Good pacing.

A real-life "Wonder."

A real life story of “Wonder.” Honest, heartbreaking and triumphant.
challenging hopeful informative sad fast-paced

This book had so much promise and I did enjoy reading it but I wanted more! I wanted to know more about his adult life and it just kind of abruptly ended so that's why I gave it a 3 star rating. I do think it is a good book for students and adults to read so they can get a first person narrative of what growing up with facial and body deformities is really like. Give to fans of Wonder as a good nonfiction pairing.

It's a quick read, but it is so wonderful to hear him speak candidly about his experiences. I love the genuine feel you get about him while reading his memoir.

This is a heartwarming and well-told story about a boy coming of age. I loved it so much that I plan to read it aloud and share it with my fourth and fifth graders. It got me interested in trying lawn bowls too. Robert Hoge's bravery and humor is touching and inspiring. Highly recommended.
