Robert was born with severe physical deformities, which ultimately effected his ability to walk and his facial features. When born, his mother considered giving him up and walking away. Robert may not look like the typical boy, but he certainly acts like a typical boy. This is a memoir of his life, where he describes the world's reaction to his appearance and his ability to rise above and lead a typical life.

I wasn't compelled by the story. While there was potential, I couldn't connect to it and find an overarching message. The story described several events through Hoge's life, but there never seemed to be an overarching connection.
