Almost a return to the (much preferred) early Koontz style. He was a lot more graphic in his descriptions of the evilness of the bad guys than he was in early days, and I would prefer it to be otherwise. For a good writer, there is no need for that to build real suspense. I found myself skipping over sections, sometimes several pages, to avoid it. Nonetheless, the general plot and theme were reminiscent of his earlier books, especially one of my favorites, Watchers.

His writing style is fascinating hair this book was just weird. Not in a good way. I was more interested in the dog
Meh. I love Koontz but this was not his best. I had high hopes that it would be reminiscent of Watchers, given the intelligent dog part of the storyline but alas, it was not. Also, a number of things related to Woody's Autism were problematic (functioning labels, for instance). And the beginning was better than the ending.

I enjoyed this book very much. There's a wonder dog, a horror genre type virus, a mutating man, and a shootout. What more could a girl want in a book?
I adore just about everything he's ever written so to give a 3 star was hard for me. I didn't hate the book, the premise was really lovely and the good guy characters were as always endearing, it was just alllllll the rest, it felt like 3/4ths of the book was spent in the meandering minds of criminals and just DETAILS. Too many details and blah blah blah to get into the rhythm and enjoy the rest. I should be able to come up with a better explanation than "blah blah" but I'm a tad exhausted from forcing myself to finish the book. I still loved every one of the good guys and the dogs, if it were more them and less blah it would be a different book.
3.5 stars. Interesting, strange story. Very gory as usual.
