I know I am one of those who usually thinks the best book ever written was the last one I read..HOWEVER..this book is a different kind of 5 stars! This book was exciting to read because it was fiction but what deep deep truths throughout. I'm buying it now that I've flown through the library lend. I cannot explain in type how quickly and deeply this book has changed my daily thoughts, prayers and actions. My six year old has heard me talk so much about it she is begging for me to allow her to read it when she is ten! :-D My thought language is so very 1800's hahaha I recommend this to anyone who wants to love the Lord deeper, one who is suffering, the married. It is written like a journal which I have always loved. Oh thank you God for placing this book in my hands just at the right time!

The more pious Katherine became the more boring the book became. And I swear characters were introduced just so they could be killed off. The book did have some good insights into the Christian life I just think it could have been done in a less boring way.
5+ ⭐️ What a wonderful book! My best friend, Marilyn recommended this to me and oh my.....it is going on my all time favorites shelf for sure. A beautiful story written in journal entries of a woman’s faith journey from 16 through marriage and motherhood, prospering and suffering. So much wisdom and honest reflection of what true wrestling through your faiths looks like. It was first published in 1869 but is as relevant today as anything I’ve read. I will read this over and over and recommend without reservation! ❤️
Re-read- 8/21-10/2/2020 remains a 5+⭐️

This was a splendid books with many truths throughout. I enjoyed the first part of it more because she was my age.
I actually think this book is worth about a 3.5, but I round up :)
I was recommended this book 5 years ago but I refused to read it (as I was in my "I hate God" phase...). I am glad that I decided to pick it back up. It combined two of my favorite genres (teenager diary, historical fiction) with a genre I have never read before, Christian fiction.
A nice story about a young woman growing up in the early 1800s. It gave lovely glimspses into every day life, marriage, and families of the time. I was disappointed, however, by the fact that so many characters DIE!!! I guess this is being realistic, but it got to the point where I wasn't sure which of the protagonist's children were living and which were dead as they always seemed to be coming and going. I suppose this did structurally create the "trials" that then led Katy to God, an experience that was both relatable and encouraging to read.

An excellent novel that challenges and exhorts. It made me question how serious I was in my walk with Christ and inspired me to grow closer with him. A worthwhile read that offers encouragement and also moves one outside of her comfort zone.
My favorite book of all time. Each reading causes me to think deeply and to evaluate my life in light of Christ's sacrifice.
I dare say this is my favorite book. It's not just good reading - it's life-changing. This story of a woman's life journey with God is so inspiring and so REAL. Even though her story takes place in the 1800's, I can easily relate to it today. It's not just one struggle that she overcomes - it's a lifetime of getting to know her Heavenly Father. She has successes and failures, triumphs and tragedies, and through it all, she gradually comes to see God's hand over ever area of her life. This book has inspired me to want to know God better and love Him more. Of course, I can't do this on my own, but above all I am reminded that when I draw near to God, He draws near to me.
I highly recommend this book!
