Thank you Entangled for the finished copy of this book, my opinions are my own.
Quick synopsis:
Welcome back into the Mist…in the astonishing sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller To Kill a Shadow…
Some fear the darkness. It’s the place where horror hides, concealing its rank, sharp teeth and insatiable hunger. But there is no darkness more feared than that of the mist that’s overtaken the kingdom…and its brave—and ultimately doomed—soldiers.
Except for Kiara Frey.
Tropes:
YA Romantasy
Highly anticipated sequel
Magic
Feisty FMC
Secrets
Cursed lands
Sacred temple
Thoughts:
This was a wonderful sequel to one of my favorite reads last year. I loved the dual perspectives of Kiara and Jude along with the development of their magics. There are some absolutely fantastic quotes in the book:
“I hate your feelings,…they typically end up with an arrow being shot at us or someone trying to stab you.” He wasn’t wrong.
“We’ve spent our lives buried beneath the threat of death, and that’s no way to live. I’m not done with this life yet, and I sure as hells am not done with your brooding ass.”
This is the final book in the duology, but the world could still be explored with different characters, this world is interesting and still ripe for more stories. Highly recommend reading this duo!!!

A better ending couldn't have been written for this story. All of the lore in the book was even better than the first. Seeing everything tie together was so satisfying. The continued banter between the MCs was perfection. The world seems so large that I could see a spinoff happening and it being a good read also. I do feel that the book was a smidge too long. There are easily some parts that could have been omitted and not left holes. The twist was like "sure, I guess I could see that" but not really as impactful as anticipated. However this was still a legit wrap up to the series.

Thank you @bookedwiththeemilys @katherinequinnwrites @entangledteen for the #gifted copy of To Shatter the Night.
In this highly anticipated sequel, we return to the Mistlands. Kiara and Jude’s quest to break the dark curse over Asidia.
Much like the first installment, this book is high-action and fast paced. There is a lot packed into this book, and my eyes were glued to the page.
This was a great conclusion to the series, and it elevated the duology in my opinion. I especially enjoyed meeting the new side characters and the found family elements within this book.
𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙞𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙚𝙣𝙟𝙤𝙮:
-Upper YA romantasy
-Yearning and angst
-Feisty shadow wielding FMC
-Prophecy, cursed lands, and secrets
-Found family

⚠️ Spoilers in Review ⚠️ you’ve been warned.
This was so boring. It picks up immediately where book 1 ends & has me thinking - OK we’re in a bit of a rush to save the world. Nope. We waste time being like he left me 😖 and I know my girl is gonna find me!! Then constant “he was here, now he’s not, where is he now? He’s captured and being tortured! Ope not anymore! Now he’s trying to find us.” 🙄
I didn’t hate book 1. It was fairly trope-y 2012 feeling YA romantasy. I didn’t have very strong feelings overall, but I didn’t hate it. This? I had to fight myself to keep going. I wanted to know what happened but ohhh my freaking god it felt like nothing happened until they reached the temple. Plus for a first book that was pretty OK killing characters off? Nope. Not this one. Her brother even gets brought in… for no other reason than to be Jake’s love interest 🙄
Do we learn anything more about the world? Nope. I don’t even fully understand their world/country/politics/magic/gods. I was hoping this book would explain it but nope, it was non stop “I love him but don’t want to admit it” and then over the top cheesy mushy love stuff. Like FFS you’re trying to save the world without getting killed 🙄 and don’t get me STARTED on the fact he had a condom in a world I thought was like… dark ages level tech?? CMON.
This feels like it should have just been one edited down 600 page standalone. Bah.

What would you do if the darkness talked to you?
Well, if you were Kiara… you would answer it with a fight. If you were Jude, you would scare it away… These two were a match made in the night and I loved their romance so much.
I picked up this book the very same day it arrived because I was sooooo invested in their story after reading To Ki!! A Shadow. Now, please don’t ask me how much I remembered from said book. 👀 I’m old and tired and mostly overwhelmed on a good day, okay?! Eventually all came back to me.
But let me tell you… this was… So many things happening everywhere, all the time. 🫣 For a moment there I thought this had to be a trilogy because how would there be time to untangle it all? With that said, the ending was so good. Probably my favorite part of this book. With the very beginning a close second because who doesn’t love a MMC who would sacrifice himself to save the FMC?!
These sprayed edges also didn’t hurt my reading experience 😜😁😍

I just could not get into this at all, which is a super bummer as I loved the first book. I'm going to re read book one in the new year so I can go into this book again knowing what's going on. Might just not be the right time for me.
