OOF. bitch. i am.......girl. mama. honey. speechless. gooped. gagged. wig. etc

like everytime i read these realist/naturalist late-19th century novels that put the heat on the back of my neck I can't help but try and impersonate what it would be like – what it musthave been like really – to read this in 1890, completely clueless. what a ruckus it must have been! what a thunder it must have been on the heart of hypocrites and progressists alike. this book feels hot, as in actually warm, as in you can make out the rays of oppressive sun hitting you in the forehead as you read it. i think i must have had like 50 cups of coffee in the days i read it bc it just feels like a book you need to read while drinking scorching hot paint black coffee. it took me a while to get into it, i even told my husband when i was about 25% in that i wasn't really enjoying it, that not much was happening, but literally just a few more pages in i was totally hooked and til the end of it i couldn't drop it any longer. loved it

Estou realmente surpreendida, não esperava gostar desse livro.
Ele parece um grande estudo de sociologia que permite observar e analisar cada personagem, assim como a teoria determinista, que apesar de eu não concordar, foi muito bem construída no livro.

Brazilian literature at its finest. Não é à toa que se tornou um dos nossos maiores clássicos.

The narrative says one thing (is full of racism) but the story tells another. The worst character is the white guy who explore and steal from the poor just for profit
