This one surprised me. While some of the characters are rich and pretentious, it was such a good story of friendship over decades battling he wealth divide. It wasn't poetic, or amazing prose, but I just really enjoyed the read.

My first Meg Wolitzer! I knew one of my book clubs was discussing The Interestings soon when I ran across this copy in a used book sale. At only $1.99, it was fate, and I couldn't say no.

I love a good story about a group of friends aging together over decades. This particular one focuses on the varying degrees of talent, success, and jealousy that impact those friendships - and I found it compulsively readable. The prose was, for me, seamless as she would shift from one friend to another. Each character was flawed and interesting, and Wolitzer time and again found ways of striking small and large truths.

I'd definitely read another Wolitzer, which may very well be the new one, [b:The Female Persuasion|35480518|The Female Persuasion|Meg Wolitzer|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1503001734s/35480518.jpg|56875270], out early next year.

This reminded me of Franzen's "Freedom" but without the pretense of trying to be the next great American novel, making it both more palatable and enjoyable. There was something in the beginning that reeked of ordinary, but much like life, the next 35 years in the character's lives corrected that. Constantly contrasting 'present' with 'interesting', the story never really decides which to choose, leaving the reader to work it out themselves--as good novels should.
