I don’t normally read historical fiction, but I’ve read almost all of Alan Gratz’ books about WWII, because they’re so interesting. This isn’t my favorite of all his books I’ve read, but it’s definitely still a good one. Despite us only getting to know the characters in a short amount of time, each of their unique personalities shines through. It was hard to believe this entire book only took place over the course of a single day, because so much is happening. There’s so much action, but also a lot of emotion as the characters talk about their families. I loved how all the stories overlapped and connected, as is the case with most of Gratz’ books and it was a happy yet bittersweet ending as Dee got to go home without fulfilling his own personal mission and leave his best friend behind.

YA Novel set on June 6, 1944 that tells the story of four different characters’ experiences on D-Day. I really like how the author pulled in the experience of Black soldiers, immigrant soldiers, the French Resistance, and Canadian and British soldiers. While good, I have enjoyed other Gratz novels more. Each character’s experience is separated into “Operations” and I liked that but I wish they had all woven together more. Solid book.

I read this book with my son, who HATES to read. It was a fun story, but wish it had been more in depth. I feel as if I got a tablespoon of information when there is a plethora more story that could have been told.

Much like in his book, Refugee, in Allies you meet characters who become your friends and walk with them on this horrific day in France in 1944. Though it happened 75 years ago, as I read, I was right there with Dee and Sid and Henry and Samira and Monique and Dorothy, fighting to free France and the world from Nazi rule.

Reading 2020
Book 33: Allies by Alan Gratz

Reading any Alan Gratz book is done through the lens of his book Refugee. I loved that book and recommend it my former students and adults alike. YA books are not just for kids

This book takes place on D-day and goes through the perspective of many characters. It brings to light what happened on that day and how so many people's lives were taken in the blink of an eye.  One thing I particularly liked about the book was how it showed the perspectives of so many people. It showed how all these people came together to fight for a common goal.  Overall this book was like a window into another world but really it was just a normal window.
