I attempted reading this book at a show choir competition, which is quite a dichotomy and will likely reread this book in a more calm environment. I found much of the content thought provoking, and was more aware of the sound of wind on my ears this morning on my bike ride to work. Im not sure I am particularly with silence, or calm, or meditation but is something I am trying to work on and found this book very thought provoking towards those goals.

A lush meadow of insight lined with the occasional landmine of false profundity. Overall a worthwhile read on an underappreciated subject.

The value that this book provides is an opportunity to consider all the different ways silence might manifest and be accessed. It certainly had me thinking about silence in ways that hadn't occurred to me before.

I felt this was a bit unstructured and rambly. I liked the idea, and really wanted to like it. The photos are beautiful, and indeed, certain passages were interesting or peaceful. But mainly, it felt like a lot of nice-sounding sentences that were strung together, with little depth or content.

For the Norwegian explorer and entrepreneur, Erlin Kagge, the key is the 'silence within' that exists in each of us but which needs to be tapped if one were to connect to that rich core which is the source of real peace and joy.

To paraphrase Churchill, this book is like a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. That in no way belittles the work or it's author as the subject of silence can't be explored without waxing profoundly philosophical to dissect its many shades and nuances.

In addition, the output is a great service for those armchair travelers who may gain some insight into the subject without undergoing a frost-bitten trip to the South Pole or the visceral experience of New York from it's stinking sewers below.
