I will admit a certain bias up front: demonstrate a certain amount of recklessness and I will have a hard time listening to anything you have to say. Early in this author tells a story of discarding the batteries for his radio just before beginning a solo trek to the Antarctic. After that I had to battle with myself over whether I cared to finish the book at all. It was a silent battle, so I suppose that kept me on the point. In the end only the brevity of the book allowed me to finish.
I suppose I am doomed to disappointment in books like this. They are inevitably written by people of privilege far beyond my own (which to be fair is considerable) and use examples that I relate to not at all. When they deign to discuss the lives of ordinary people working ordinary jobs I wonder if they realize how much those words come soaked in condescension. I would like to read a book on silence or contemplation that acknowledges the possibility that the person in the next lane on their commute or in the next cubicle over at the office may actually have a rich inner life.

I’m leaving this book feeling..unsure. Yes, inspired, still, and at peace, but also in acknowledgment of the many ways that it is easier for some to find silence than others. I believe that Kagge gave attention to this notion as well, but there are many ways this went missing.
Overall, this was a great book—short and speculative, full of moments to reflect. Use this book as a tool to find your own silence versus a guide of wisdom.

reading the book itself felt very peaceful and decelerating
This is a nightstand book.
Something you read a few pages of to help you shut off your brain to sleep.
Starts strong with promising insights. Some thoughts resonate more than others. But ultimately, the message is pretty simple.
Nothing wrong with simple. I think the author’s goal is simple: give silence a try. Put away your phone & go for a walk. Notice the silence around you. Marvel at the world.

A little redundant in parts, but graceful, luminous and philosophical all while being easy to read. Well worth it.
