Wizard's First Rule

First read the series in 2006. This time listening to the story. Took me a while to jive my own version of the characters the reader performs, but once I did, he performed a great Darken Rahl.

An excellent fantasy adventure! A masterful building of suspense. The basic storyline is probably typical fantasy but that didn't make it any less enjoyable. I found myself racing through this book trying to find out what happens next, even when what was happening made me want to cringe and close my eyes. I liked the character building, especially how the villain was a vegetarian. He wouldn't kill animals but had no trouble at all slaughtering people which I found fascinating. After awhile I almost grew tired of so much happening and wished for a quiet moment to collect myself, which never came. I also found the actual "wizard's first rule" to be hilarious and oh so true. Looking around at modern society and the addiction to Fox News I can't help but shake my head and think...yep, wizard's first rule!

This is a solid fantasy adventure with typical heros put through the wringer on their quest to save the world. If you like fantasy novels in general and enjoy a good thriller, you'll like this!

Wizard's First Rule was a decent book. I thought that some parts of it were over the top. Even for a fantasy book some things seemed exaggerated. Those things weren't enough to stop me from wanting to read it though. I'll be reading the second book in this series soon, Stone of Tears.

One of those books that pulls you into the story line. You feel what the character is feeling. Great writing and great story.

I read this while I was in middle school....um....

Ok, this was a decent book, and it was an enjoyable read. However, for my own personal reasons, I couldn't give it a higher rating. I wasn't a huge fan of Goodkind's writing style (too many repetitive or unoriginal phrases in the writing), I didn't like a lot of the tropes he used and some of his choices in storytelling (these also felt unoriginal and played-out to me), and I didn't like all of his characters.

That said, I will continue this series, since I have more of the books and they're kind of classic fantasy. Like I mentioned above, they were enjoyable, and I did really like pieces of the magic system he created. For these reasons, I'm looking forward to where the world is going.

Interesting story, but I am definitely spoiled after the reading the wheel of time series, and I found myself making a lot of attempted comparisons, which ruined the experience for me. I might try the series again in a few years..

I read this series a while ago and I remember enjoying the first few books books but as the series went on Goodkind seemed to keep changing the rules and bringing in new plot devices to keep the story going and I started to feel that it didn't really matter what happened because it was going to be the same story as last time just in a different setting.

This book was tough to get through. The plot took forever to develop and the characters were all awful. I didn’t like a single character. The dialogue was very poor, especially between Richard and Khalan. All the seemed to do was do something stupid and then apologize and say “that’s what friends do”. It really was a slog to finish. I won’t be continuing with this series.
