Not usually a fantasy fan, but the premise gave me some Lovecraft meets Marvel vibes. Uniting to save a great city felt timely during the pandemic.
I listened to this on audio. There is music and sound affects added into specific scenes plus it is read by one of my favorite narrators: Bahni Turpin. So it was a ride and beautiful and the characters were all messy in a good way and I just want to experience NYC even more so now. Soon, someday. Jemisin delivers once more on a daring story and I cannot wait for the next one.

Simply amazing. Jemisin is a freaking genius & I can’t wait for more of this series. Will write a longer review later, but just know with NK you can do no wrong
Fantastic book! This is a book that deserves to be dissected. I enjoyed the way Jemisin characterized the boroughs throughout the book, as the boroughs met.

My partner is a New Yorker and had strong opinions about it. As a non-New Yorker it was enjoyable enough!

It had me miss NYC really bad! I live in a different state and would not move but the way NYC was described was so accurate and fun.

Feels like a love letter to New York and like some love letters, can be a little too winding and heavy handed in its sentimentality, but I still enjoyed the cast of characters and premise.
Fun, exciting, epic... NYC is described with such rhythm and energy, vividly enough to feel like I've visited. Also appreciate laying out the characterization of each borough -- I've long been confused about the geography/character of different parts of NYC, which it seems most media about the city just assumes I know anything about (I wouldn't expect others to know Decatur from Midtown!).
Mostly a joy to read, although I did find some of the characterization rather clunky, some of the viewpoints heavy-handed in a way that took me out of the narrative -- I felt like there could have been more nuance at times that would have made it hit harder (Aislyn's first chapter, for example). Also... I'm conflicted about rooting for NYC, in light of what we learn about the Enemy! Although I'm assuming that will be dealt with more in sequels.
