Never read Gaiman’s comics, but it’s an interesting start to the series.
I started the series after finishing this volume and read the second while watching it. The pacing of the comic feels a little rushed and there are some changes in the show that I prefer over book version, but I still really like this comic.
Spoilers for the comic and the series:
The battle between Dream and Lucifer in the series instead of Choronzon is more dramatic. Doctor Destiny's motivation in the show gives him a little more depth than just being a villain.
Though I missed the Etrigan cameo in the show, separating the story from the larger DC world works better for the story, though there's still a gender-bent Constantine. It's trippy to think about The Sandman and Doom Patrol series being part of the same world.

I forgot how scary the first book is! Read the series as a teenager. The art is beautiful, the paneling and lettering are so creative. A lot of the DC world references def went over my head as a kid.

Neil Gaiman is a great writer and he's definitely gotten better over the years, as all good writers do. There were a couple of things that stood out as perhaps being a product of their time and it being one of his earlier work, nevertheless they deserve to be criticised.

The way a female character is introduced, "Her nipples are hard and dark and shrunken on breasts like empty pouches". Yup that's the first thing we learn about her...there are much better ways to show a woman is old and sick than describing her boobs.

The casual use of a slur for Romani people, it was really unnecessary and could definitely be edited out of future editions of the book without affecting the story at all. Maybe it is taken out of the newer editions, I'm not sure as the one I borrowed from the library is an older one.

These flaws aside, the story and world have me captivated and I can't wait to read more about the characters and their adventures.

Objectively I know this was really good, yet nothing could draw me in. I wasn’t really enjoying reading it.
