This one is so much darker and sadder than the first.  The things Sybella has dealt with her whole life and the journey she is on is a hard one.

(Sexual abuse is talked about)
(Suicidal thoughts)

Beast is my favorite man.  In my mind he isn’t ugly at all because his heart and personality is just the best but the author has stated multiple times that he is ugly ugly lol
Good thing Sybella prefers toads to princes 😍😩

I just really love this series. This pacing is alot faster. A lot more action. And a lot more drama!

How do I even start this review.. the heartbreak, the love story, the strong badass female role, and the crushing childhood trauma really took me on the biggest rollercoaster and I loved it. There were parts of this book that once I read it I had to put the book down and just mourn for the character or just digest what I read. I thought I wouldn’t like this book as much as the first since it tells a different character’s story but wow I was wrong. This one is definitely more heartbreaking than the last and I’m sure the next book will be even more so. There are major trigger warnings for this book.
There are major trigger warnings for this book like incest, rape, child death, suicide attempt, suicidal thoughts, blood, murder, and more. It completely caught me by surprise that she had several cases of rape and incest that she had to endure. I don’t think I could have handled it at all. Also, the fact that she finally met someone that let her have an escape from her terrible reality and got pregnant and had a daughter just for her father to kill it in front of her. I was crying for her during that part. I could not even imagine the pain and suffering she had to go through.

Wow! That was dark AF. made the first book look like child’s play! Major, major trigger warnings, some expected from the hints in book 1, and some so jaw-dropping to the point it was almost unnecessary. Like:
Did d’albrecht have to kill her baby?!?? Did she have to have been pregnant at all?!
I did find the book engaging and surprising at times… I wouldn’t have expected where the plot went. And I don’t mean that about the more “shocking” twists, but rather the more gentle ones (like
Beast kidnapping her rather than sending her back to dalbrecht multiple times<\>). The weak spot was the romance… I like the latter half being about the redemptive power of love, but I felt like she fell a bit too quickly. I would have believed there was love there, but not necessarily of the romantic kind. Circling back on those triggering parts:
Sybella delivering all that upsetting info in the final part of the book basically in a couple long monologues just felt a little too exposition-y… the book had already done a decent job of showing her trauma  and showing how twisted her family was, so it felt like a step in the wrong direction to info dump that way. And it was a lot to take in as a reader.
in general, from my own limited perspective, I do think sybella was a good portrayal of trauma and PTSD. Oh also
I hope book 3 explains why the abbess was so wretched to her and hated her that much to send her to her death??? Bc WTF?
