How do I even start this review.. the heartbreak, the love story, the strong badass female role, and the crushing childhood trauma really took me on the biggest rollercoaster and I loved it. There were parts of this book that once I read it I had to put the book down and just mourn for the character or just digest what I read. I thought I wouldn’t like this book as much as the first since it tells a different character’s story but wow I was wrong. This one is definitely more heartbreaking than the last and I’m sure the next book will be even more so. There are major trigger warnings for this book.
There are major trigger warnings for this book like incest, rape, child death, suicide attempt, suicidal thoughts, blood, murder, and more. It completely caught me by surprise that she had several cases of rape and incest that she had to endure. I don’t think I could have handled it at all. Also, the fact that she finally met someone that let her have an escape from her terrible reality and got pregnant and had a daughter just for her father to kill it in front of her. I was crying for her during that part. I could not even imagine the pain and suffering she had to go through.

Sybella should've kissed girls. They mention she taught Annith and Ismae how to kiss??? THE MAID??? Tephanie and her deserved to have at least a moment...

THE BABY??? NEVER IN MY FUCKING LIFE DID I EXPECT THAT (I did, there was foreshadowing but it still took me a few minutes) MY GOD.
THE WAY MEN DEFENDED D'ALBRET ??? There is his fucking daughter telling you how vile he is and was to his wives (SIX FUCKING WIVES DEAD, HELLO??) but nooooo he's a honorable man, he's good on the battle field. DIE. It's giving "But he was nice to me."

I liked this one, but not as much as the first one. My opinions might change on a reread because I went through like a 10-day slump while reading this, so that may have affected my enjoyment.

This is LaFevers' fourth book I read as well as the fourth book I read in this universe and I can't repeat enough how much in love I am with both her writing style and the world-building of the universe.

I never thought political intrigue and historical assassin spies would be things that interest me, but I cannot help but be drawn into every single one of these books.
Dark Triumph is no exception.

I really want to live in Sybella's head. Having read Dark Triumph, as well as her further adventures in Courting Darkness and Igniting Darkness, I still have not enough of reading about Sybella, her sisters, Tephanie and beast. I am missing Ismae from Grave Mercy a little, even though she does appear, I would have loved for her to appear more, even though I do understand how Sybella's story took her far away from any place Ismae would be at.

I am very sad that Mortal Heart will be the last book of this series I can read, before I have to start rereading them in order to get back into this world LaFevers constructed, but this series definitely wedged itself into the list of my favorite books.
