The Grapes of Wrath

John Steinbeck

3.79 AVERAGE

Should be required reading in schools (if not already). Brings the history of the dust bowl to life better than any text I can imagine.

John Steinbeck is an author I was forced to read in high school, but was a bit young to really understand. Appreciated this a lot more this time around with a bit more understanding of the time it was published and era it was written about. Didn’t realised when I borrowed the audiobook that it was the dramatised BBC version.

Great themes overall, and compelling story, high four I’d say as some things just didn’t hit for me.
Everyone should read tho

Steinbeck makes me feel like I am a time traveler, learning not only about the time period but also about the human condition.

The Grapes of Wrath is beautiful in the same way that an abandoned and decrepit half-fallen down barn is beautiful. Worn by the elements and slowly returning to the earth, sad and majestic at the same time. The Joad family suffers in a biblical way, chased by a furious fate into exile, fighting and killing and dying along the way. But somehow, despite everything, they survive. Never to be the same, of course, but Steinbeck doesn't tell us that part. That part we only know because we have survived. We're all Joads, in some sense, and Tom Joad is still with us.

“Then it don' matter. Then I'll be all aroun' in the dark. I'll be ever'where - wherever you look. Wherever they's a fight so hungry people can eat, I'll be there. Wherever they's a cop beatin' up a guy, I'll be there. If Casy knowed, why, I'll be in the way guys yell when they're mad an' - I'll be in the way kids laugh when they're hungry an' they know supper's ready. An' when our folks eat the stuff they raise an' live in the houses they build, why, I'll be there.”
