this book would have been an easy 5⭐️ from my if it had been written by a woman. bram stoker is horrible at writing women, and it’s distracting at times. i do love mina and lucy, but it felt like they were only there to uplift & make men look good. they only ever discussed men with each other & to themselves, like it was obvious this dude didn’t have a clue what women talk about. his writing is very misogynistic in a subtle way, and i do blame most of it on the time period, but it doesn’t excuse it.
despite that, i did enjoy the story & the characters. the idea of telling the story through journal entries and newspaper clippings is interesting and fun, but it does get confusing the more characters are introduced. i also think it took away from dracula himself way too much. for a book about dracula, he was hardly in it! the ending was unfortunately very underwhelming and anticlimatic (and full of slurs), and it ultimately just ended up disappointing me because i really did want to like this book. although, i did enjoy this way more than i initially thought i would, so kudos to that!

We are so accustomed to all the Dracula and vampire movies/books, that when you read the original one you feel a little disappointment, since the character itself doesn’t actively appear throughout the whole book.
He has some appearances, but not as many as one would wish. Still a very standout book, and I get all the praise it receives.

Jak zobaczyłam liczbę stron to podeskcytowałam się, bo miałam nadzieję, że warto będzie przebrnąć przez całe to tomiszcze. Niestety zawiodłam się.
Rozumiem, że głównie Stoker zwrócił uwagę na psychologię kilku głównych postaci, i to mu wyszło. Na pewno znajduje się tutaj wiele materiału dla badaczy literatury, psychologii postaci, historii psychiatrii. Mamy też dużo teorii o samym wampiryźmie.
Niestety pod względem fabuły książkę można byłoby skrócić o połowę i nadal zawierałaby dokładnie tę samą akcję. Nie polecam więc nastawiać się na początku lektury, że doświadczymy ponad 400 stron przepełnionych akcją, walkami, zmienianiem w wampiry.
