(I received an advance reader copy of this book, etc...)

There's something inherently dubious about posthumously published novels. Why wasn't it published when it was written? Would the author want it published now? I don't know the answers to any of those questions when it comes to the new Michael Crichton novel. All we as readers have is the text. Fortunately, Dragon Teeth is a fun novel. The setting is the "Bone Wars" of the 1870s, when rival paleontologists competed for discoveries in the American West. The story is told with a winking humor closer to comedy than Crichton's later novels. I can make a guess as to why he chose not to publish it. The book is a mishmash of genres. In large part, its a western, but with bits of history, science, farce, and historical fiction. There's a running found journal aspect to the story telling. But it reads well, despite not really knowing what kind of book it wants to be. Don't worry about the behind the scenes questions. This book is worth a read.

First western, Chrichton has a way to make his book feel so real you want to go and learn more. Loved this book.

3.5. While this wasn't my favorite Crichton book, his tireless research into his stories always make for a fascinating read. There's afterwords by Crichton and his wife that really lend to the book. Great on audio as it's read by Narrator Exraodinaire, Scott Brick.
