What a fascinating read. I can see why it was so impactful at the time it was published, and still is. I didn’t love some of the scenes chosen to convey the ideas, they were not my style but effective.
I didn’t love how choppy it felt. The transitions were so abrupt and sometimes I wasn’t sure what was happening. But I could see that being intentional. Definitely a classic if you want to study the early civil rights movement. Told deeply and poignantly. It makes me frustrated that so much of this “invisibility” is still a reality.

A very enjoyable first half, but once the novel becomes solely about the Brotherhood, the whole thing becomes heavy-handed and quite a chore to read. None of the characters there are particularly well-developed and the whole second half with its speeches and philosophizing reminds me of Ayn Rand where characters were just cogs for Ellison to express his thoughts (which unlike Rand, actually have some merit, so it's not a total loss).

Is this a good book? It absolutely is, it tells such an important story and books such as this one really paved the way for literature and society to get to where it is today. However, I wasn’t a huge fan of the writing style or the storytelling. I had a hard time getting through this book, simply because most of the chapters that are really long, have little to do with the progression of the story.
This book can be split in half and it tells two different stories. I appreciated the writing on a stylistic level, but I felt as if many of the storylines were redundant.
I did appreciate seeing the imagery and consistent use of symbols throughout. It made it very enjoyable to close read.
All in all, it was an okay book.
*I read this for school*
