I've been dying to read this book since high school; I finally got to it, and it was well worth the wait. Composed as an allegory, Invisible Man traces the journey of a young Black man from the Deep South on a mission to understand his grandfather's message. Through this journey, he not only comprehends what his grandfather wanted him to learn, but gains a better understanding of himself and his role in the world. Ellison is a master of prose and undoubtedly a hallmark of American literature. This novel is intimately pieced together without any missing link, leaving you stunned and forced to dive deeper and deeper into the text. I am still in awe at the scope and grand feat of this work. I am looking forward to reading the scholarly consensus of this work, and I urge everyone to read this book because it illustrates myriad problems relating to society's treatment of racial issues (even typing that, he claims, forces invisibility).

Ellison is a master in crafting characters and plotlines which feel fluid and alive; whether it be rambling monologues or incredulous scenarios. the main character's internal dialogue is described exceptionally well; the reader is truly along for the ride.
i did have some difficulty keeping up with certain threads, due to the aforementioned stylistic choices, but overall found the story compelling and engaging. there are many faux watershed moments, keeping the reader as unstable as the main character and the world he navigates.
definitely need to read more critical analyses of the book, especially regarding its anti-communist sentiment. reminds me of a Vijay Prashad quote: "Marxists don't know their own birthdays."
