Beautifully written... emotional, poetic, articulate exploration of the a young black man's search for identify against the backdrop of manipulation and racism. As I was reading I found myself simultaneously wanting to shake the protagonists into some sense, crying for his plight, and join him in rage. The sad thing is that nothing seems to have changed in the in the following 70 years.

This book is near perfect in pacing, development, imagery, cultural commentary, and symbolism. It's superb on both surface and deep level. My appreciation though was supremely enhanced by Joe Morton's narration. I highly recommend the audio because I was invested and floored at every turn. A masterpiece all around
