""Ah," I can hear you say, "so it was all a build-up to bore us with his buggy jiving. He only wanted us to listen to him rave!""
When you jokingly diss your own book at the end and it's absolutely true. Oof!
This book is not well written. I find that it's an extremely accurate depiction of a series of events that are relatively plausible. It definitely could have happened (well, some of it). This, however, does not make it good. Real life is LONG and boring as all hell and so is this book. That's what editing is for and this book needed it desperately.
Also can't not mention the HEFTY misogyny. Absolutely disgusting.
Why was the incest/rape scene included and why was it SO LONG???? There was really no need for that. Didn't like it, didn't appreciate it.
There's some interesting commentary on race but nothing that isn't done a hundred times better in other books that are worth significantly more of your valuable time. I do not recommend this book.

I haven’t read this book since high school, recently learned that Ralph Ellison was from OKC, so I decided I ought to reread this book. I listened to a very performance driven audiobook version which helped drive this book for me, but I ultimately appreciated this much more than I did during AP English in high school. Parts were gut punches, others it felt like the narrative equivalent of scrambling up a disintegrating rock wall, which I’m sure lends to its legend. Well worth the reread.
One of the best fiction books I've ever read...maybe the best
