Another excellent Ruby Dixon story. Vali and Ranan are a pair of misfits brought together by a slip of the tongue (not that kind!) and stumble into and through a relationship. Ranan is shy and introverted, content with his own company (as well as that of his giant turtle friend) and doesn't know what to do with Vali, who lies as easily as breathing, thinking she needs to keep him happy so he doesn't discard her, as so many people have in her life as a slave. There is a bit of one step forward, two steps back in their relationship, as Vali tries to anticipate Ranan's needs and reactions and doesn't always get it right, whereas Ranan stays silent and stoic for fear of getting tongue tied and saying the wrong thing.
I really liked when Vali began to bond with Akara (Ranan's turtle friend) and would have loved to spend more time with the seakind - they call themselves that, not sea-ogres, FYI. Seems like a kind of Waterworld-esque society, and about as close to mer-people as I like, haha.

What fun! Loved the world building. I also always appreciate how Dixon explores power in her characters.

I enjoyed this and finished it in one day. The hero is a cranky, silent type who gets tongue tied at times. The heroine is a spunky woman who does the best she can with what she's given.
There's a little miscommunication trope, but wasn't drawn out too much IMO.
