It’s definitely a great book. I didn’t know any of the women mentioned beforehand. The only reason for 4/5 stars is the language used. Like the use of some AAVE by a white author. Otherwise it’s a great read. If you like drunk history then you’ll love this book.

This is such an inspiring collection of stories! Mackenzi Lee's writing perfectly blends her humour and facts and I couldn't have enjoyed the book any more. My one complaint is that I don't believe the book was edited very well, as there were many clear errors - mostly inconsistent dates and spellings.

Non fiction | History | Badass women | Breaking the mold | Cultural/Social

No spoilers as it is a nonfiction and a collection of stories

Rating: 4.5 stars, rounded up for the sole fact it is 1 of the few non fictions about women in history

This book is filled with women in history that stood up for themselves, fought for what they believed and outwitted many men. Proving that gender is just that and doesn't relate to your strength, wittiness,...
Mackenzi Lee wrote down the stories of the women amazingly and it are all women you very probably never heard about, I know I at least knew none of these women. The writing it good, and her commentary on certain things was great too.
Yes yes yes, go read this book already. Some of these women deserve their own badass tv-show.

This book was a great compendium of women from around the world who've made a difference. Like Lee acknowledged in her introduction, "many of the women [she] chose to highlight...[were] morally complex. They are sometimes violent, ruthless, and downright criminal." As a history major, I would have expected to have been familiar with at least some of these women but that wasn't the case. Lee made it more exciting because she highlighted lesser known women that often never made it to the history books.

Lee's spotlight wit is what really sold the book for me. Her commentary toward the people (mostly men) who were foils to our heroines, was cutting and superb. Ericksson's lovely illustrations were beautifully colored and served as an awesome addition that perfectly complimented the text.

My only critique is Lee's obvious bias in retelling the stories of the women's lives. Lee is no historian and she made no attempt to be impartial or refrain from commentary when detailing the events occurring within the lives of the women in her book. Her criticism was aimed at anyone who doesn't share the same 21st century political and moral worldview as her, calling any dissenters small minded. I give less weight to biographies that insert personal opinions with recorded fact.

As a side note, if you choose to read this book in conjunction with [b:Rad Women Worldwide: Artists and Athletes, Pirates and Punks, and Other Revolutionaries Who Shaped History|28502749|Rad Women Worldwide Artists and Athletes, Pirates and Punks, and Other Revolutionaries Who Shaped History|Kate Schatz|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1460671020s/28502749.jpg|48656093], you'll be happy to know that only one woman overlapped in both books, so no much in either book may be old hat to you. I'd recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about women's hidden contributions worldwide.

When I was going through books that I could read this year, I stumbled across this book, Bygone Badass Broads and just by reading the title I knew that this book had to be mine. I have also loved following Mackenzi Lee on twitter which made me even more excited to read it. Overall Bygone Badass Broads celebrates badass women from history, making easy to digest for everyone and anyone even though who dislike history.

Being a history student, it is not a surprise that I loved this book especially as someone who often seeks out history which focuses on those who are forgotten in traditional history, women, people of colour, those with different sexual orientations. It is therefore like this book was made for me and I loved every page.

Even though I knew a maximum of 3 or 4 people in the overall book itself, the book contains 52 of these great and inspiring women and I even found out some information that I didn't already. The book itself goes through the women chronologically from the past to the present day and has a wide variety of women from varying backgrounds which was something that I again loved. History tends to focus on Western countries so with this book I discovered women throughout history who didn't fit this norm and I love everyone that I learnt about.

Mackenzi Lee has this way with words that allows people to easily digest the history in this book as well as making it easy and entertaining to read which let me tell you is extremely hard to do so I commend her great. I can officially say that if I am able to write like this then I will be very shocked but I can dream.

The illustrations in this book are also just so beautiful and amazing and I hope the illustrator is recognised for the beautiful work that is included in the book!

I also like this book is so important and that these stories deserve to be told and I will definitely hand everyone and make them read this book. If that doesn't work then I can always shout it from the rooftops.

The Verdict:

Bygone Badass Broads is a book that I want everyone to read. It's important, witty and overall just amazing! Please get this book!

Picked this one to read during women’s history month. Cool to read about all the things these women did. Not so cool that they are often forgotten in the history books.
