Should have been the first third of a large book instead of a full length stand alone. But mostly interesting. 3.5

I didn't think I would like this book because it's a scifi fantasy. This was my first scifi and I ever read Enders Game before this but I really liked it. I was surprised that I would like it as much as I did, I need the next book like now!

I really enjoyed the eight books of the "Ender's Game" series that I've read, and found this to be no exception. We hear of events that are only hinted at in the other series, and meet one of the characters from it - but he's not (yet) the long-thought-dead hero of the Formic Wars and struggles to make an impact while being recruited for a new international armed force.

It was a good read. My bf and I listened to the audiobook and the voice actor was very captivating. Some side stories were confusing in terms of how they played a role in the greater story. It's not a traditional book in that it seems like an Introduction to the greater world. Which I guess it is. Hated Lem and his story. Wish there was more Imala. Wit was uncertain?? But I did enjoy the main story with Victor.

I very much wanted to give this novel 3.5 stars but goodreads doesn't allow it. A very enjoyable story where we get introduced to two very interesting characters. The writing is superb as it always is with Orson Scott Card (and Johnston in this case). However, this novel doesn't quite end. It's very clear that its just a set up for the next several novels in the series.

The main characters are mostly memorable. Victor is very likable and believable. Lem Jukes' insecurities and struggle to get out from under his father's shadow is very entertaining. We are also introduced to Mazer Rackham, but he doesn't get much 'screen time' (he gets much more in book two).

Overall it was extremely enjoyable prequel to Ender's Game but doesn't get quite as personal as Ender's Game or nearly as philosophical as Speaker for the Dead.

Best book in the Ender Universe apart from Ender's Game so far. Probably got bumped up a star by it's brilliant audio narration.

It was just ok. I thought parts of it were interesting, but I found myself zoning out through a lot of the audio. Victor's plot was the best- everyone else's was kinda a drag.

never reaches the same level of intensity as the original trilogy, but presents some interesting details of the first formic war that were always tantalizingly glossed over. I feel like the co-author did a lot more work on this than OSC, and doesn't sell it quite as well.
