Stars Above the Never Sea follows the story of Selene Amaris, a lost Faeyte and her return to her homeland of Asteria. The story takes place ten long years after the Great Shift which left her as the sole remaining Faeyte alive. She travels alongside Callan Edgeborn and his crew to get back home, and once there it becomes clear she is there for a reason.

The magic system in this book especially interested me – the different forms and levels was fascinating. The fact we are never quite sure what type of magic either Selene or Callan wields is intriguing and I can’t wait to find out more!

I had some trouble imagining the Never Sea at first, but once I did things became a lot clearer – and a lot more worrying! The way the story is woven together from the two different viewpoints also engaged me – I liked seeing the two different perspectives on what was happening. The way the characters intertwine is fascinating, and it really does feel like fate that the last Faeyte finds her way back to Asteria the way she does. I can’t say too much as I don’t want to give plotlines away!

I really enjoyed this book, but I did feel like something was slightly missing for me. The romance didn’t feel authentic at first, more like a case of proximity creating attraction rather than genuine desire. I felt like Callan falls in love with his idea of Selene rather than who she is as a person – it all feels very fast on his part.

The cliffhanger ending was very intense, and while I may not have absolutely loved this book, I will absolutely be picking up the next one as I genuinely think this story is going to get better and better!

ARC Review: Stars Above the Never Sea by Evelyn Flood
💜💜💜💜 | 🌶️🌶️ Mild

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This one took a little time to find its stride—it wasn’t an instant grab for me, but I was intrigued enough by the premise to keep going. Around the 100-page mark, the story really picks up, and from there, I was fully invested.

We follow Selene, the last faeyte, who’s enslaved in a faraway land after her home, Asteria, is invaded. She crosses paths with Callan, our MMC, who helps her begin the journey home. The world of maegis (aka magic) 🪄 is rich and imaginative, slowly revealing itself in a way that adds depth to the plot.

What stood out most to me was the banter. The dialogue between Selene, Callan, and the crew—Rio, Esme, Merrick, Sol, Matthias, and Leo—is witty, warm, and full of personality. Their interactions brought a real spark to the page.

The ending twist? Totally unexpected—in the best way. There’s definite chemistry between Selene and Callan, and Selene’s journey into her power has me excited for what’s coming next. (Book 2 is teased for December 2025!)

I’m giving this book 4💜 because while it started a bit slow, it’s a rewarding read once it gets going. If you enjoy immersive fantasy worlds, strong character dynamics, and slow-burn tension with a big payoff, you’ll want to add this one to your TBR.

Wow ! I wanted a pirate / ocean / sea romantasy book and that’s EXACTLY what I got !
Selene Amaris &  Callan  totally stole my heart ! Commended both of them on their bravery and strength !

Selene ran from her home in Asteria after being pushed to run as her home was being invaded and her people slain. At sixteen and powerless she ran into the unknown , feeling a total loss as she was truly now alone in the world. The guilt she had felt of being unable to save anyone and for being the only survivor . B 10 years later she finds freedom but she was worn down, broken and a shell of the young woman she once was . After being found and bound by an unknown person on Callan’s ship, Volatus, the mystery of her powers are slowly being discovered .

Callan , on his own journey with his crew is pushed to his limit with power to try and deliver goods back to his “home” , a home that once belonged to Selene and her Feyres .

My gosh the plot was thick!! I loved the slow burn , the details , the chemistry , tension , the mystery slowly being unravelled like I LOVED this sooooo much !! The writing was intense and emotional but also had a lot of sarcastic moments ! I loved the banter between the friendship group !  I enjoyed discovering her powers and ability at the same time as Selene , this really captured her fragile and vulnerable moments but at the same time it also made me feel the power she felt and I loved the determination she had on taking control of her desire .. I am not over that intense ending and twist reveal ! Like OH MY GOSH ! My heart was stuttering !

I now have to cry and wait until December 2025 for the next instalment 😭😭😭😭

I will always love a fantasy romance, but this was outstanding.

From the get-go, this book had me enthralled, Selene had to flee from her home, the only place she had ever known. But she would go back. Callan Edgeborn a Caelumnai, the people who destroyed her home and the one who would take her home.

You can not help but love every character in this book. Each person has their own story  to tell, and they are each different in their own way, including with the maegis they possess.

The ending had me crying, but this needs to be on your TBR
If you want to feel things and go through a whirlwind of emotions, then this is a book you need to read. The plot is outstanding , and the twists the turns had me on edge for what was to come next.

hurry up, Decmber. I need book 2

No words can describe how beautifully written this book is. I love all of Evelyn Flood’s novels but this book may be one of my favourites.
Selene’s story was very well written and her strong, but vulnerable character was one i was able to connect with at times.
The slow burn between Selene and Callan had me reading on further, wanting to meet a break in the tension between the two characters, but simultaneously supporting Selene’s unwillingness to see any sort of relationship between the two of them.
I absolutely cannot wait for the next book, and i hope to read it as soon as i can. Thank you so much to netgalley and the author for the chance to read Stars Above the Never Sea, it was an amazing experience, and i regret the fact that i never be able to experience the story for the first time again.

Thank you to the Author for the Arc!

3.25/5⭐
It has ships, pirates or the high seas, I will read it. Also, SHE' s the shadow wilder. I loved it, in a world full of shadow daddies, we finally have a woman with those powers

As much as I love my morally gray men, Callum, the mmc was refreshing, he wasn't broody and dark and mysterious. He was just trying to do his job, help his crew. However, as much as I liked him, I felt like the fmc started to trust him wayyy to quickly. And that goes for everyone on the crew. She started caring for them too quickly in my opinion for the situation that she was in.  Sometimes the writing left me a little bit confused. The ending was truly something, I thought that by mow 8 would be used to cliffhangers, I was wrong.

AN EASY 5 5-star read

I all but devoured this book in one night. It had me kicking my feet, giggling and crying all in one. I truly can’t put into words how amazing this book is. I was not expecting some of the plot twists. I feel like the last 15% of the book, I was on the edge of my seat, not wanting the book to end.
I fell in love with Selene and Callum; their dynamic is perfect, and their banter is top tier.
I found that the characters were incredibly relatable, which helped in connecting more deeply with the book.

I am anxiously awaiting book 2 to see where Selene and Callum's story goes!

This was my first Evelyn Flood, and I can without a doubt say I will be reading more of her work.

Thank you so much, Evelyn, for this arc copy of Stars Above the Never Sea.

A romantasy on the high seas. I liked the magic in this one. The forbidden magic, the chosen one, she's the only one of her kind left alive and she's hunted. Escaped from enslavement, she's also a murderer. She ends up on his ship. Can he come around and see things from her side? If he does, can he protect her from his people who are still out for her blood?
