Tear Me Apart

J.T. Ellison

4.0 AVERAGE

J.T. Ellison does it again!! So many layers to this story and characters. The twists and turns will keep you whiplashed and guessing.

Everyone had a dark side.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It's curious this story centers around a young Olympic hopeful skier because the only way I can describe this book is a downhill black diamond ski race that doesn't quit.

There aren't any big surprises or big reveals (or a plot that is new or revolutionary) but it works here. Yes, you're fed bits and pieces of the true story the entire time, yes you know who and even why long before the end, but the intensity is in how it is going to shake out. WILL the perp get caught? What is everybody going to do now?

With any race or championship, spectators hold their breath to see what will happen, who will win, and that is the exact ride of this novel. I won't remember it or run out and recommend it, but it was a great plunge read!

Unlike the first J.T. Ellison book I read, the plot did not make up for the terrible dialogue and overly simplified characters in this one. Skip it.

DID NOT FINISH: 9%

It’s a book about a girl who gets in an accident skiing and finds out she has cancer. Then they find out her parents aren’t really her parents. I didn’t care for the storyline and the dialogue is very contrived. I started skipping pages almost immediately.

I was very close to quitting this book very early on due to some of the authors writing style. In the beginning couple pages they repeat “strong girl” and “tough girl” about a billion times. And “we raised a tough girl” as some weak link to establish they raised her. We get it. You’re her parents. You’re a perfect family. What could happen now? (Feign shocked face)

Also, some of the medical stuff drove me nuts. You don’t discover cancer in the middle of a one hour (???) orthopedic surgery and suddenly have a diagnoses and an oncologist waiting and ready to talk to family. Yeah, I’m a bit of a stickler for medical accuracy or at least believability. And no, unplugging a vent doesn’t kill someone. Shockingly enough, medical science though enough to put backup batteries in a machine that breathes for someone.

The author had some awkward writing parts but overall I’m glad I stuck with it. I was afraid that it would all fall apart or end poorly. I felt like, for the most part, things were tied up well in the end without feeling too rushed or crammed together (as can happen with books that involve twists and deep secrets and such).
