This book left me so incredibly frustrated. Things started off strong--the writing was super fast-paced and I could barely put it down for the first 50-60% or so. Around ~70% in though, things just started to feel messy but I stuck with it, wanting to see how it all played out. Then we got to the ending. This is where the frustration comes in.
It's gross to me that the only queer character ended up being the murderer. I feel like the author heavily implies (maybe even labels) this character as a lesbian and then--surprise! This character, Blair, is actually OBSESSED with her male best friend and only got engaged to her fiance, Vanessa, to make him jealous. Using queerness as a plot device rather than representation feels so gross and icky to me. I doubled checked the publication date thinking, ok maybe this was published quiet a while ago and hopefully the author has spoken about this since or something... but NO. This was published this year. In 2025.
I feel like this kind of reaction can be seen as being overly sensitive or too "woke" or something, but I think what some people don't realize is that this these homophobic undertones do have real consequences and impact. There is a reason that hatred toward different minorities is as rampant as it is right now. This covert villainizing of members of the queer community is so dangerous and whether intended or not, is impactful and normalizes/validates queer people being evil or villainous, which has been happening for a long time. If Blair isn't actually supposed to be a queer character at all, but rather just pretended to be just to make her best friend/murder victim jealous, then that's also gross. No matter the intention, this is problematic. I'm honestly just sick of this kind of thing going unchecked. There's no excuse for it. I won't even go into how the rest of the women were portrayed in this book...
I will say t while some other aspects of the plot felt a little messy and annoying to me too, this book overall felt like it had a lot of potential. I hope this author reflects on the problematic elements of this book at some point. Until then though, I won't be picking up any more of her books.

The main character was incredibly annoying in her single mindedness of trying to find a man, any man, to love her. Fast forward to multiple “crazy”women who are all driven that way by a man or competing for a man- who is an explicit asshole. Then, the main character learns to love herself and being single for, I kid you not, a week, before the author has her meet cute with someone.

What the hell did I just read. At no point did I have any idea where it was going to go next and I love that. Crazy women are my favorite kind of crazy.

This was a pretty decent thriller. I read a lot in this genre, so I figured out who the baddie was, but it was still an interesting read. I love an unreliable narrator, and Rosie didn't disappoint in that category.
